Interim reference

Interim reference: when and how?

An employee can also request an interim reference during an ongoing employment relationship — on change of supervisor, promotion or on request.

In addition to the final reference, an interim reference can be issued — while the employment relationship still exists. It serves as a current performance and conduct assessment at a specific point in time.

Entitlement requirements

An entitlement to an interim reference typically exists when there is a legitimate interest — for example on change of supervisor, promotion procedures, applications within a group, or longer employment without a reference.

A mere wish without an objective reason does not necessarily entitle the holder to issuance. In case of doubt, HR should examine the individual case.

Difference from the final reference

The interim reference uses the present tense ("is employed", "fulfils the tasks") instead of the past tense. It contains no termination section and no closing formula with reason for leaving.

Zeugnis converts an interim reference into a final reference with one click — tense, termination section and closing formula are adjusted, the rating level is retained.
